Body line shaping
The features of the human body are arranged in various proportions. Studies have shown that certain proportions are considered ideal. Body Contouring is the term used to label the procedures through which we improve the proportions of the body, altering its shape. Our aim is to make the body’s appear more attractive and symmetrical.
When a man or a woman does not have symmetrical body proportions and this is negatively affecting his/her image, he/she may seek the aid of plastic surgery, in order to better conform his/her body to the correct proportions, or at least a close approximation to them.
A plastic surgeon may employ a variety of techniques in order to achieve the desired results, such as liposuction, fat transplantation, the use of implants, the use of injectable materials, etc.
LIPOSUCTION AND BODY CONTOURING
The most basic method employed by plastic surgeons to perform body contouring is the well-known liposuction.
Liposuction aims to remove localized fat and thus smooth down the surfaces of the body. Over the past few years, new methods of liposuction, such as laser liposuction and power assisted liposuction (PAL), have been added to the arsenal of plastic surgery, and as such liposuction is becoming increasingly effective, and requires less time spent in recovery.
FAT TRANSPLANTATION AND BODY CONTOURING
Fat, which is obtained via liposuction, can be processed and deposited in areas where there is a lack of volume, via a fat transplantation.
Removing fat from an area where it is deposited in excess and using it for filling an area where there is lack of volume, is the real meaning of sculpting and the philosophy of Plastic Surgery.
In recent years, the method of fat transplantation has evolved, having become increasingly undamaging to fat cells. When fat cells are implanted, a fraction of them is absorbed while the rest remains permanently in place. Newer methods of obtaining and processing fat allow for larger portions of the implanted fat to remain permanently.
This has helped solve several problems, as fat is provided by the organism in normally quite sizeable amounts, therefore providing us with large quantities of material to use in filling in even the larger surfaces.
INSERTS AND BODY CONTOURING
Another effective method of body contouring is depositing implants. These implants tend to be made of silicone. Over the years, the manufacturing of implants has been improved, and as such, appropriate, specific implants are being developed for more and more areas of the body. As the quality and health control is very strict, we can assume that implants manufactured by trustworthy companies are safe to use.
Implants can be deposited via a small incision that will not leave a particularly evident scar, may be used for the breasts, the buttocks, and the calves, but also more rarely in areas such as the abdomen, the male breast, the upper arms and various other parts of the body.
INJECTABLE MATERIALS IN BODY CONTOURING
Hyaluronic acid is a material that has been developed over the last few years and has by now also found a use in body contouring. It is possible to obtain hyaluronic acid that had been manufactured especially for the body and can provide an easy solution where there is a need for bulk.
ALTERNATIVE METHODS OF BODY CONTOURING
Apart from the aforementioned methods, a plastic surgeon may employ alternative methods in order to achieve symmetrical body proportions. Buttock lifts, breast lifts, thigh lifts, and even abdominoplasty or “tummy tucks” may be considered methods that can aid body contouring.
An increasingly large number of methods are developing, as far as body contouring and altering body proportions is concerned, making this an easier and more effective procedure.
