REPAIRING NIPPLE INVERSION

WHAT IS NIPPLE INVERSION AND WHEN DOES IT OCCUR

There are several cases of women whose nipples may, rather than point outward, be retracted into the breast. This condition is defined as nipple inversion.

Nipple inversion can pose an aesthetic as well as functional problem. An inverted nipple cannot be used to breastfeed, yet at the same time the problem can be aesthetic. Nipple inversion may occur without having been caused by anything specific, and is not necessarily related to breast construction. On some occasions, however, it may have been caused by an inflammation in the breast.

Particular care is needed when an inversion occurs suddenly, as it may even be a symptom of breast cancer. As such, it is best to consult a doctor, who will be able to determine whether the problem is purely aesthetic or if there are grounds for health concerns.

HOW TO REPAIR AN INVERTED NIPPLE

The repair procedure for this problem requires a light surgical operation. Usually, the operation is performed with a local anaesthetic and does not require hospitalization.

The plastic surgeon will make an incision at the nipple’s base, and entirely sever through it the fibrous tissue that is holding back the nipple. Afterward, he will position the tissues in such a way as to entirely avoid contact between the severed fibrous tissue and the surface of the nipple, to prevent the problem from appearing again. After having ensured the tissues have been correctly arranged, he will secure them with stitches and then suture the skin.

The patient may even return to work and their daily activities on the very same day. Post-operative pain usually does not occur, and in the small chance that it does, it can be combated with pain-killers. The outcome is permanent.

AESTHETIC CORRECTION OF THE NIPPLE

As during the operation it is necessary to sever the connection between nipple and gland, the breast in question will not be able to used for breastfeeding in future. Therefore, repairing an inverted nipple will correct the aesthetic issue, but not the functional one. Of course, women with nipple inversion cannot breastfeed either way; therefore, as far as breastfeeding is concerned, nothing is gained, yet nothing is lost either. Therefore, the procedure of repairing nipple inversion should be undertaken for aesthetic concerns and not functional ones.
